Seattle based App studio, Qrayon has released Resume Star 2 for iOS, which produces a professionally typeset PDF resume right on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad
Resume Star came out of Qrayon founder, Chen Lim's frustration with existing Apps: "Once, when reviewing resumes, I was struck by how many poorly formatted and badly spaced resumes I saw. Some even came in multiple colors and fonts that tried to look like a webpage rather than a resume. This made them hard to read and gave a poor first impression of the applicant. I was curious about what caused this, and talked to a few people. Some were trying to write a resume using a word processor, and getting tripped up on all the complicated formatting options. Others were using Apps supposedly designed to generate professional resumes, but they were trying to sell users on how many fonts and styles they had. The problem was that folks were spending more time picking the resume theme than making it targeted for the job opening."
Honor-Ware:
The Qrayon development team decided to write their own resume App, one that focused on delivering just what job applicants needed. During development, they also decided to introduce an innovative pricing model. According to Chen:
"We wanted to put our money where our mouth was, and align our interests with the person applying for a job. We thought of a few things like adding a tip jar, or the usual reminder to rate us if the App worked. Then one day someone brought up the idea of 'Hey, why not put it out for free, and ask users to pay us only if they score the interview?' It was a pretty bold idea, and sounded too risky at first. But the more we thought about it, the more it made sense. It completely aligned our design goals with that of the user: To get the job."
Qrayon calls this approach "Honor-ware," only paying for software that works. "With Resume Star, instead of our users having to take a leap of faith that we've written a great App for them that works, we're putting our faith in them. We think the Honor-ware approach could be one that works well for some Apps in the App Store. Right now it's a bit of an experiment. We'll see if more developers choose to adopt it in the future," said Chen.
