Restoring PPC, SDK 10.4/10.5 and GCC 4.0 Support to Xcode4
Unfortunately Apple decided to drop support for PPC, SDKs 10.4/10.5 and GCC 4.0 in Xcode4. This hasn't been done for technical reasons, though, but only because Apple wanted to do that. If you have a parallel installation of Xcode3 on your Mac, you can easily restore all that functionality to Xcode4. I posted a detailed step by step guide at Stack Overflow how this can be done. For convenience and to reach a wider audience I'm posting it here again.Read more

Remove a floating menu bar from full-screen Flash videos
Under Safari and 10.6, I've noticed an annoying problem: All too frequently, when I go to full-screen on a YouTube or other Flash video, the menu bar 'forgets' to disappear. It's really easy to fix.Read more
10.6: Xcode 4 Coverflow-like keyboard shortcut
Under Xcode 4 you can have a kind of Coverflow of your window-tabs by pressing: Cmd+Shift+Ctrl+Opt and Arrow Left or Right.Read more
Confirm to Quit Google Chrome
There are times when you hold Command+Q when you actually wanted to hold Command+W and all your tabs are gone and its really frustrating because Chrome doesn't ask you for a confirmation. Luckily Chrome has finally added this feature but you need to enable it first.Read more
10.6: Dictionary Wikipedia Bug Fixed in 10.6.7
Just a note that the 10.6.7 update fixes this previously mentioned Dictionary bug in which the Wikipedia section had a scrolling issueRead more
Setting AppleDisplayScaleFactor for single applications
Apples hidden AppleDisplayScaleFactor provides a means to set the UI display scaling factor, a feature which has been built into Mac OS X since Tiger (I think) but has never been exploited so far (probably due to the difficulties from moving from pixel-oriented graphics to a more generic concept).Read more
Enable Pinch/Zoom on Firefox 4
Firefox 4 disables two finger pinch/zoom gestures on a Mac. Here is how to make pinch/zoom work again.Read more
Change Safari's User Agent to Google Chrome
Google Maps sometimes will take an interminably long time to load in Safari. I have found that changing Safari's User Agent to Google Chrome consistently fixes this problem, resulting in snappy loading of Google Map web pages.Read more
10.6: Create new AppleScript document Service
I got tired of copy-pasting AppleScripts I found online into the AppleScript Editor, so I made a simple Automator Service to do it for me.Read more
Archive messages in Mail.app using a single keystroke

Resize specific text elements on a page in Safari
Safari lets you zoom the contents of a web page in two ways: you can zoom everything on the page uniformly, or you can zoom just the text. Neither option is ideal, for a number of reasons. I wrote an extension called Rightsizer provides a third way that you may find better.Read more
Speed up by disabling Screen Sharing
I am trying to squeeze some more speed out of my Mac, as it is necessary for me to also use a Windows emulator on it.Read more
Open iPad GarageBand projects on your Mac
Songs created with the iPad version of GarageBand can not be opened with the Mac version (at least not at the time of writing). I've found a kludgy workaround that will allow you to open at least part of your project on your Mac.Read more
Fixing backup / iOS updates
Ever since I had upgraded to 10.6.7, or about the same time, my iPhone was no longer backing up.Read more
Install Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection without the bloat
Arguably the most useful part of the Office suite, Remote Desktop Connection is available as a free, separate download from Microsoft. The standard installation process will automatically install a bunch of background stuff that you arguably don't need, for instance, the auto-updater, crash reporter, and office dock package. Following this simple hint will allow you to install RDC without the added bloat and annoying auto-update popups.Read more
Change text on web pages in Safari
This is a trick I've used for a while now, but I don't know if it's so obvious to others.Read more
Make event emails sent from 10.6 iCal Server come from actual user
In Server Admin, the iCal settings allow you to specify a single email from which event invitations will come. For a personal calendar though, you really want the email to come from your own email.Read more
Enable trim support on Apple and third party SSD’s
The folks at hardmac.com have found a way to modify a system extension that came with the 10.6.7 update, to enable trim support on pretty much all SSD drives that support trim.Read more
Pseudo-sync Safari Bookmarks on your own server
There are tons of methods to sync your Safari bookmarks: free apps/plugins like xMarks, and paid services like MobileMe. Unfortunately, none of them met my needs/criteria, which are: free, private, and secure. This hint is a combination of information gleaned from many locations, and is not actually a sync. Instead, you will have one single set of bookmarks that you use on all computers. Oftentimes, I learn as much from the comments as I do from the hints -- so if you have a better way, please feel free to post a constructive comment.Read more
Make any web page temporarily editable
This hint is similar to the hint Change text on web pages in Safari but is somewhat easier to use.Read more
Use unsafe web fonts safely in iWeb
Lots of times, to get just the right look for your website, you want to use a font that is considered 'unsafe,' meaning unless someone viewing your page has that same font installed, the browser will pick some other default font to take its place. This obviously is undesirable. There are definitely more sophisticated and better ways to use non-web safe fonts, but if you want something easy and quick in iWeb, here's one thing you can do that's very easy and doesn't require any CSS or HTML code or widgets.Read more
Use The New Amazon Cloud Drive Service with iOS
Amazon introduced a new Cloud Drive service offering browser-based file storage and music streaming. In the countries where this is offered, anyone with an Amazon account can receive 5 GB of free storage.Read more
Reveal the password in a password field on a web page
If you're ever in the situation where you have forgotten the password for some web site, but it is right there in the password field of the login form -- only in the form of asterisks or bullets -- and you would like to copy it from the password field, if only it were not asterisks...well, you can.Read more
Change iCal Server invitations so they will clear spam assassin
The default invitations which iCal Server sends may be seen as spam by Spam Assassin (score of 5.8 or so), because of a large picture attachment.Read more
10.6: Make a temporary Administrator account
My department runs a large enterprise level network of managed Macs in a rapidly growing school district. We use a software deployment solution to push out all district software and we use Workgroup Manager to effectively manage user environments. Like most enterprise-level networks, nearly all of our staff users are non-admin users with mobile accounts.Read more
