BIO-Diesel: A great idea against rising gas costs & alternative fuel
So this sounds great however has there been any indication of the actual emissions from said burnt and of course the unburnt particulates that come out of the exhaust ?!? Also, how bad a performance hit do you take, if any of course.

I wouldn't mind the exhaust smelling like french fries at all but it the emissions are the same or close to it then no go.

I know a bloke who does this with his diesel Toyota Landcruiser.
He uses diesel to start/warm the engine, then switches to the alternate tank once the engine is running, which is full of a 10:1 mix of veggie (fish&chip) oil and an octance enhancer which you can easily buy and mix in your backyard safely.
You have to switch back to diesel for the last 5 mins of engine running to put diesel back into the fuel lines.
He made no substantial modifications to the engine or fuel systems as he still uses diesel for the start.
If you were to use solely veggie oil, you would need to dramatically increase the compression of your engine to get the oil to fire when cold.

As far as I know, it will only work with diesel blocks.
Diesel oil is exactly that, an oil. It is greasy, nasty stuff which sticks to everything and doesn't evaporate (as it is an oil).
Whilst in normal form is is flammible (but not inflammible). It must be compressed to make to required explosive reaction. It's the compression & hot air that makes it explode, there is no spark. This is why you need higher compression for veggie oil, as it must be highly heated and compressed to be explosive.
Well that's a very basic description that contains some innacuracies.
This non-requirement of electric spark is why diesel engines can run, once started, without an electrical system. It self-heats the air/fuel mix and will keep running until the fuel runs out, or the engine is stopped via its stopping mechanism. I have heard about a truck that was burnt-out on the side of the highway, but the shell/engine kept running for 2 days at idle until the fuel ran out (urban myth alert).
Be warned though, you need a good cooling system as the veggie oil will not explode at the lower temp of diesel and needs high compression and temp.
I don't believe that the octane boost is alcohol-based, it would need to oil-based so as to not break down the oil.

Glow plugs work in conjunction with the starter motor to give the inital kick of the engine. They heat the first mix of air/fuel and allow it to explode and give the first spin of the camshaft.
Diesel is far more economic than gasonline or gas so long as your injectors are clean and the mix is correct and the compression ratio is correct and it's tuesday.
It's not so much about how good it is for the environment, it's just damn cheaper.
If you want to know about turbo-intercooling for diesel engines, you'll need to hit the web.

Hey Guys,
Good to see you all talking about this, and getting excited about it.
May i suggest freds TDI Club its a great forum www.tdiclub.com
I run my car on 100% biodiesel read about www.biodiesel.org
I am also starting a clean energy company called 2Renu, Inc. and we will be producing and distributing biodiesel in a huge way providing i get the Capital funding i am going after.
Biodiesel is an amazing fuel it has a higher Cetan then DynoDiesel and it is 100% nontoxic it even biodegrates at the rate of sugar it truly is wonderful stuff. The great part is i get high performance and around 60MPG in my Passat TDI and have my eye on the new Tourag SUV which they sell with a V10 TDI engine providing 530Ftlbs of tourqe WOW cant wait.
I am going to upload a picture of me pumping biodiesel into my green Passat TDI... in the mean time write me any questions you might have.
oh and let me know what you think of this design i tossed it together for the Vermont Biofuels Association www.vermontbiofuels.org
CHOW.

Hey Guys listen to Thatch on this one
he is quite the expert
How do I know you may ask?
His office is right down the hall from me.
